Sorry!) actually having rights to a film about >Roswell (whether fiction or "documentary.") >Is the "Close Encounters" Spielberg still in the picture in any way?" Mac, Although Bob Shell is correct in saying that Stephen Spielberg was never involved with the "alien autopsy" film, Bob's explanation that the "claim stems from one wrong report in one UK newspaper back in 1995", isn't the actual story. There apparently was a rumour that Steven Spielberg was planning a 50th anniversary Roswell film and that story was featured in the UK newspaper, "The Sunday People", on 9 August, 1992. By an extraordinary coincidence, the article was an "Exclusive by Carl Nagaitis", co-author with Philip Mantle of "Without Consent", a book on "alien abductions". I spoke to Carl last year about the article and he confirmed there were rumours from the US that Steven Spielberg was interested in producing a Roswell based film. On 22 December 1993, the "Daily Mirror" newspaper also published an article about the rumoured Spielberg film and for the first time, also claimed that, "Hollywood insiders say the director has got hold of previously unseen film footage of the flying saucer crash scene taken by a military officer". This could be a reference to Ray Santilli's film, which he had mentioned by this time, but it's not certain. I've spoken to both of the journalists this article was credited to, but neither could recall where the "footage of the flying saucer crash" story originated. It seems that the original story of Steven Spielberg's interest in a Roswell film was coincidental and may subsequently have become confused with Ray Santilli's "Roswell" film story. James.
