From: "Klemm - Pamela S." <psklemm@umd5.umd.edu> Date: Sun, 16 Feb 1997 19:21:00 -0500 (EST) Fwd Date: Mon, 17 Feb 1997 06:38:10 -0500 Subject: Asteroids The Washington Post ran a fairly good article (front page) on asteroids possibly impacting earth today, February 16th.(The article ran today--not the asteroids impacting earth...sounded like a warning on seond read) It's available online at http://www.washingtonpost.com The one thing I did not agree with is that both this article and the recent Discovery Program "Three Minutes To Impact" imply, in fact state, that there is no documentation that indicates anyone has ever been killed by an asteroid. Aug. 16, 1951, in the middle of a rash of meteorites striking earth (which according to La Paz was unprecidented in modern times) the New York Times reported that Iranian Newspapers were reporting 12 deaths, 19 injuries, numerous livestock deaths and the destruction of 62 homes from a "rain of meteorites". Doesn't that seem like an awful lot of damage from some meteorites? Pam
