For a good summary of current thinking on FTL travel and communications, and why
most ideas won't work, read _Faster Than Light: Superluminal Loopholes in
Physics_ by Nick Herbert.

Yes, some physicists think that FTL travel is possible.  It does not even
violate Einstein if you do not pass through the space in between two points!!!!
