Launch was originally set for Sept. 24. The delay was necessary to complete testing and preparation of the new Lockheed Martin LMLV2 launch vehicle, according to a statement from NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif. Lunar Prospector, a 660-pound spacecraft, is designed to orbit the moon at an altitude of 63 miles for a one-year, $62.8 million mapping mission. A key objective of the Ames-managed mission is to find direct evidence of the presence or absence of ice in shaded regions of the lunar poles.
