LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Lunar Prospector mission to the moon has
been pushed back two months to Nov. 23, NASA said Wednesday.

Launch was originally set for Sept. 24.

The delay was necessary to complete testing and preparation of
the new Lockheed Martin LMLV2 launch vehicle, according to a
statement from NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

Lunar Prospector, a 660-pound spacecraft, is designed to orbit
the moon at an altitude of 63 miles for a one-year, $62.8 million
mapping mission.

A key objective of the Ames-managed mission is to find direct
evidence of the presence or absence of ice in shaded regions of the
lunar poles.
