Hope you didn't >>forget the "Sputnik Connection" (not that any of the witnesses >>saw Sputnik) I don't think the news of Sputnik II reached Levelland until well after the incidents started taking place. Before the Levelland series, there was a general increase in sightings at the end of October and the first two days of November--prior to Sputnik II. There had been as might be expected a large increase in sightings after Sputnik I with everyone outside trying to catch a glimpse of the satellite. The same would be true after Sputnik II. Venus was very bright and as Hynek pointed out, the cause of a lot of UFO reports. However, looking at the period immediately before Sputnik I, a pre-launch buildup can be detected. Loren Gross' updated account of 1957 suffered somewhat from the fact that while he was writing and publishing material new reports and material were being found. CUFOS kindly let Ed Stewart and I copied their 1957 holding which included Buckley Griffin's amazing scrapbook with many newspaper clippings from small towns. Tom Rouse also kindly let us have copies of his extensive newspaper clipping collection. Robert Gribble had his own clipping service during this period which he also kindly donated to Loren. All these source contributed many new accounts. Barry Greenwood, several others and I have screened about 1000 1957 newspapers worldwide for reports from this era. (Kansas is a promising area for further research, but there just was not enough time to deal with 1947, let alone, 1957.) Loren's booklets give some idea of the amount of reports for 1957: #1 Jan-Mar 22 #2 Mar 23-May 25 #3 May 26-July 31 #4 Aug-Sep #5 Oct-Nov 2 #6 Nov 3-5 #7 Nov 6 #8 Nov 7-12 #9 Nov 13-30 #10 Dec Hopefully, we can prevail on Loren for a large one volume treatment of the 1957 Wave possibly with FUFOR as the publisher. >Reminds me of a debate I had on Usenet a few years ago with a >retired DOE employee debunker who went by the pseudonym of >"George Smiley."
