It is the most isolated spot belonging to brazilian territory. The island is the upper part of an extinct volcano. It's base is 5500 m deep in the ocean and has a diameter of 50 km. No tourist is allowed to go there. Only scientists (biologists, geologists etc.,) and reporters can set foot on the island but with a special permission from the First Naval District of the Brazilian Navy (Address: Praca Barao de Ladario s/n., 3 andar - Rio de Janeiro - RJ - Brazil - Fax: 021-216.6104). You need three days to reach the island and the sea is not easy to navigate. The average temperature is 24 C. No one lives on the island, except a few sailors and members of the Brazilian Navy who stay there along rounds of 120 days. No women are allowed. Civilians working for the TAMAR Project (studying sea turtles) usualy go there for research. Before the famous photographs by Almiro Barauna other UFO sightings took place on the Island. I hope this helps Philippe Piet van Putten abp1@uol.com.br brasil@uol.com.br http://www.pufori.org/brasil
