Up in the sky! Is it the dope guy? Lapeer: UFO might have been plane making a drug drop, police says Thursday, August 27, 1998 By Tom Gromak JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Lapeer - Sheriff's Department detective Lt. Gary Parks said dozens of residents who saw an unidentified object in the sky Sunday night were not hallucinating. But the object was not a crashing plane or a flying saucer. Parks said it might have been a low-flying plane making an aerial delivery of drugs to someone on the ground. Residents first reported seeing what they thought was a plane in trouble around 9 p.m. Sunday. They described seeing landing gear and lights, but few reported hearing any sounds. A number of residents reported seeing the plane go down in the Davis Lake area. Those reports prompted a fruitless four-hour search by Lapeer County firefighters and police. "It was not nothing. People out there did see something," Parks said, adding that he has yet to determine what. By tracking and mapping the calls to 911, Parks was able to plot the path of the plane, in from Lapeer County's western border, near Davis Lake, and back to the western border. He said the plane might have flown in low, cut its engines, and glided for at least part of the flight - most likely the turning maneuver in the Davis Lake area. The fire that some residents reported seeing - at least one resident said he saw a military-style parachute flare falling from the sky - might have been dropped from the plane with a package attached. Aerial drug drops were reported two years ago in the Columbiaville area. Parks said they could provide a quick and perceived safe way for distributors to make deliveries. Parks said he has spoken to dozens of callers about the sightings. A few mentioned seeing an all-terrain vehicle on the ground in the same area that the plane was sighted. He is seeking more information on the ATV, any unusual cars or people in the area, or anything that residents might have seen dropped from the sky Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to contact Parks at (810) 248-1382. Copyright 1998 Michigan Live Inc.
