Subject: P-1947: MUFON -- Its Death
I started subscribing to MUFON's 'Journal' (so-called) in 1975. It
was riddled with typos, so I told them to fix it. Over the years
the so-called JOURNAL (not really a journal) progressed and
improved somewhat.
With the Ed Walter's lie and Bruce Maccabbee joining the lie for
$20,000 from the sale of Walter's book in 1986 or 1987, MUFON
was pretty much dead in my mind.
I called Walt Andrus once about my work regarding the lights at
Yakima. I mentioned Persinger's theory to explain lights as
result of earthquake strain. Andrus ridiculed me and Persinger.
(I don't subscribe to Persinger's theory.) I was doing field
investigation for Andrus at the time. So I said, "Why work for a
man who ridicules me."
I ended up later speaking with Andrus
twice more. He told me in one conversation that he had been
driving home from seeing Hal Starr in Arizona and stopped at
Marfa, Texas, where, amazingly, he said, he pulled off into the
viewing area and saw a ball of light hovering near a radio
tower. With my interest in balls of light, I asked him for a
report and interview. He mumbled, "No, it's not important.."
So much for science.
Then, I spoke one final time about three years ago. He was into
Budd Hopkins' farce of the high-rise abductions ("data" that
comes to the researcher in plain brown wrappers). He was really
pumped. He said that Hopkins had just met some big U.N. cheese
in an airport but couldn't reveal his name--apparently a
witness. It was obvious to me that Andrus was out of it.
Here's a thought: 5,000 MUFON subscribers times $25 a year's
subscription equals $125,000. Throw in sale of 500 symposium
proceedings at $25 a piece,we get $12,500. Total: $137,500 a
year. Take out 30% taxes, we get $92,500. 'Course, MUFON is
educational/organizational; who knows what Walt's real profits
are. So, Walt pulls in nearly ONE HUNDRED THOU a year. MUFON's
been around for 30 years. Walt's made a million bucks probaby.
And the guy can't buy a fuggin computer for $2,000 bucks. Gimme
a fuggin break.
Walt wrote me a note or two over the years ON MY OWN LETTER, and
sent it back. Guy can't afford fuggin stationary.
I spoke to several MUFON people over the year. Walt's a
tightwad. Remember he runs the "operation" out of his house.
In addition, all data goes in, nothin' comes out.
MUFON is a UFO club, nothing more. It has no actual scientific
validity.
I stopped "working" for Walt years ago. He struck me as a kindly
old fool. He did a service for ufology by collecting reports and
sticking them in his garage. He's not a scientist. Just an old
guy who's on the ropes. His days, and his era, are numbered.
Thanks Walt for a couple of interesting cases you published. But
so long, podner, it's thu las' roundup...
My next missive will deal with the death of Roswell.
