This is followed by a STATEMENT from MOD official, NICK POPE, who was appointed to Secretariat (Air Staff) Department 2A during 1991 - 1994. He is the author of OPEN SKIES, CLOSED MINDS & THE UNINVITED. UFOLOGIST TIM GOOD - UK TOUR SIGHTINGS RADIO LA MONT ON MEXICO SIGHTINGS ASBESTOS FOUND ON BENTWATERS BASE LATEST ON THE BENTWATERS CASE NEWSFLASH FROM RESEARCHER NICK REDFERN STATEMENT RE: REDFERN=92S NEWSFLASH - FROM NICK POPE UFOLOGIST TIM GOOD - UK TOUR This month sees the launch of Tim Good's latest book ALIEN BASE, which promises to be his best ever. Indeed, I am looking forward to reading it and reviewing it for another issue of Hot Gossip UK. TIM GOOD is probably one of Britain=92s most respected ufologists. A tall attractive 56 year old, looking far younger than his years. You could say he=92s the perfect English gentleman, charming, elegant and reserved. Tim Good has been researching ufology for almost 40 years, and has written several good books on the subject. When he=92s not travelling the world investigating UFOs, he lives with his German girlfriend in Beckenham, Kent. Apparently, he has two adjoining apartments, one exclusively for his huge collection of UFO related books and files. A ufologist=92s dream. Tim Good is also a musician - a violinist - and has backed some great British artists such as ELTON JOHN, WET WET WET, SIMPLY RED, and many, many more. Meanwhile, I attended one of Tim's lectures in London, arranged by UFO conference organiser, Graham Birdsall. Graham never fails to put on a good event, and this was no different. Well organised, and needless to say, a full house. Not only that, but he deserves full marks for managing to persuade the elusive Mr Good to actually perform in the first place. Good doesn=92t usually do public appearances unless of course he=92s launching a new book. This time, with a =A3200,000 advance - I suppose it=92s a must to promote ALIEN BASE. The London lecture was part of three, the others being arranged in the north of England. It was interesting to note, that come Q&A time, the audience were posing questions about a number of subjects which weren't related to Good's book, but then I suppose many folks have not had a chance to read it yet! When questioned on the Corso book " The Day After Roswell", Good stated that he thought it was grossly exaggerated, with lots of BS and porky pies. The latter meaning "lies" in English rhyming slang. He's also changed his mind about BOB LAZAR, and dismisses the MJ12 documents, which he covered extensively in a previous book. He says the TWINING MEMO is convincing, but firmly believes the others are bogus. I understand he has always had his doubts about them. When asked if he'd ever been threatened, he remarked that he hadn't, but that he'd experienced some interference on a visit to the United States. Apparently, his hotel was close to a US Army Base, and he was booked to do a talk about US bases. That same day, while he was out, his room was broken into and air tickets and documents were removed (but no valuables). He claims that the local police were not at all helpful! The last but by no means least - statement - from the Guru of ufology "We have more to fear from the people of this planet than from those of other planets". After the lecture, NICK POPE and I joined Tim for a drink, where I'd hoped to get a brief interview for our readers. Unfortunately we got into a conversation about Tim's other life - the music business - my fault, we both have mutual friends in that area. But I will be conducting an interview shortly, and will write this up in the near future. _____________________________________________ SIGHTINGS RADIO I had a very pleasant trip to the outskirts of Birmingham with two ufologists, RICHARD CONWAY and ROBERT LA MONT, who invited me to speak on Sightings radio, the US popular radio show. IRENE BOTT, president of the Staffordshire UFO Group, does a regular phone in from the UK with British ufologists in attendance. Also on the show with Irene was NICK REDFERN, author of A COVERT AGENDA. Nick's latest book THE FBI FILES is about to be published in April. Watch out for it! ____________________________________________ LA MONT ON MEXICO SIGHTINGS ROBERT LA MONT recently arrived back from Mexico and claims to have several hours of genuine footage showing UFO sightings - and landings. This is expected to include a most interesting phenomena which turned itself into a Sphinx. During his recent visit there, he met up with actress SHIRLEY MACLEAN, and filmed with a local TV company. La Mont is starting to make a name for himself as a conference speaker, and is quoted as Britain's equivalent to BUD HOPKINS, so I'm told! La Mont tells me he is a qualified hypnotherapist who has been working with abductee cases. __________________________________________________ ASBESTOS FOUND ON BENTWATERS BASE RICHARD CONWAY is the son of STAN CONWAY, a researcher for BUFORA. Stan told me he tried to warn Richard away from ufology, but like father - like son. Richard is known for his interest in underground bases. On a recent visit to the infamous BENTWATERS base - known for its alleged UFO landings - he discovered a large quantity of asbestos. This is interesting in the light of a conversation I had with an ex RAF chap from RAF Watton, who tells me that asbestos was used as a shield for uranium - or as part of a shield for nuclear weapons. =93It=92s a cheap way of doing it. It depletes radiation killing personnel - gamma causes harm.=94 he said. Wasn=92t it LARRY WARREN who insisted that Bentwaters was housing nukes? _________________________________________________ LATEST ON BENTWATERS CASE Conway also organises UFO conferences, and this month he=92s booked PETER ROBBINS. Peter is co author of LEFT AT EAST GATE, written with LARRY WARREN. Warren experienced weird activity at the Bentwaters base when he was stationed there in December 1980, at the time of the alleged UFO incidents. Larry=92s story has been publicly denounced by another witness to the event, (Ret Col) CHARLES HALT, and, incidentally, Halt is not available for anything these days because he=92s writing a book on the Bentwaters incident and his publishers have asked him to stay low profile until publication. This should be an interesting addition to the ongoing saga of Bentwaters. Halt has always claimed that the most important part of the incidents were what happened immediately afterwards. Will he finally reveal all - now that he=92s no longer in the service and worried about his pension? PETER ROBBINS is in the UK early this month and apart from Richard Conway=92s conference, he appeared at GRAHAM BIRDSALL=92s Sollihull big event - along with other researchers, such as TIM GOOD, TONY DODD, NICK REDFERN, GREGORY KANON, OMAR FOWLER, RUSSEL CALLAGHAN and GRAHAM. Having met both PETER ROBBINS and LARRY WARREN, I have always believed in their sincerity. Peter has been researching for more than 20 years and is a very thorough investigator in my opinion. Larry=92s story is a hard one, I know, but then isn=92t the whole world of ufology? Following my interest in LEFT AT EAST GATE I decided to try to find some witnesses who might verify Warren=92s story.I managed to contact one of his ex girlfriends (also based at Bentwaters) who was most helpful and claimed that Larry was indeed telling the truth, but that she and others kept quiet about that sort of thing for fear of being ridiculed and sent away. Since then I=92ve managed to find several other US personnel who were stationed at both Woodbridge and Bentwaters. Their stories are very interesting, and prove that something strange was going on at the bases, and not just during the last week of December 1980. There=92s still a lot of research to do on this but I hope to publish my findings at some stage. _____________________________________________ NICK REDFERN sent us a NEWSFASH This was followed by a STATEMENT from NICK POPE NEWSFLASH - From NICK REDFERN In January 1998, the Ministry of Defence de-classified into the public domain a number of previously withheld files on the UFO subject, which add greatly to our understanding of the MoD=92s handling of the UFO controversy in the 1960s. Perhaps the most significant file is one which details the investigative activities of a specific Defence Intelligence Staff department whose involvement in the UFO subject has long been a matter of keen debate: D155. In my book A COVERT AGENDA I revealed that D155 was one of a number of specialist diversions which was tasked with examining UFO data; however, at the time of publication little was known beyond that basic fact. That situation changed dramatically in January 1998. As the file in question reveals, the public office of the MoD which was responsible for investigating UFO encounters at the time (1967) was S4 (AIR); however, the file makes it abundantly clear that S4 (AIR)s only mandate was to make provisional enquiries with RAF Fylingdales in an attempt to determine if the reported phenomena was in any way related to the mis-identification of satellites. The file also reveals the eye-opening fact that, in those instances where Fylingdales were unable to make a positive identification, S4 (AIR) were required to cease their investigations, and any further action was to be undertaken by D155. Most astonishing of all, the files reveal that the department within D155 tasked with investigating UFO activity over the United Kingdom was none other than: =91The Space Division=92! Moreover, the files reveal that the Space Division assumed this investigative role as far back as May 1967! Given that the Ministry of Defence would have us believe that the focal point for UFO investigations is the Secretariat of Air Staff, these particular files make a mockery of the MoD=92s assertions - particularly in the light of the fact that D155 is still heavily implicated in analysing UFO data to this day. There can now be absolutely no doubt that the Secretariat of the Air Staff is mandated to carry out only the most basic and preliminary investigations into UFO encounters over the UK, and that the truly in-depth investigations fall (and have done for more than 30 years) into the domain of D155. This is a remarkable breakthrough, and one which should not come as a surprise to those of us who maintain that officialdom knows a great deal more about the UFO controversy than has previously been realised. Comments and questions can be directed to: Nick Redfern at: 20 Paradise Lane, Pelsall, Walsall, West Midlands, WSE 4NH, England, United Kingdom. ___________________________________________ A STATEMENT FROM NICK POPE There has been much discussion about whether or not other Ministry of Defence divisions aside from Secretariat (Air Staff) are involved in investigating UFO sightings. Such speculation has featured in a number of books and magazines, and has most recently appeared in a paper circulated to researchers by Nick Redfern. These claims stem from information contained in newly released files at the Public Record Office, and the central allegation seems to be that Sec (AS) had only a subordinate role in UFO investigations, while the lead responsibility fell to others. The truth is somewhat different. I have never disputed the fact that other MoD divisions have been involved with the subject over the years, and this was a point that I freely admitted, two years ago, in my first book Open Skies, Closed Minds. The problem, as ever, is one of interpretation. Conspiracy theorists make much of lengthy distribution lists found on UFO reports held in old MoD files, saying this proves there are various secret departments investigating the phenomena. The truth is that this represents the extensive circulation of information among specialists, so that UFO data can be examined by all those who might be able to explain a particular sighting. The other specialist divisions concerned have particular knowledge in fields such as radar signal analysis and satellite tracks, consideration of which forms part of any properly conducted investigation into a UFO sighting - such as the several hundred such investigations that I carried out between 1991 and 1994, whilst working in Sec(AS). Other interested parties include the Ballistic Missile Early Warning Centre at RAF Fylingdales, where staff might be able to correlate a UFO sighting with the re-entry into the Earth=92s atmosphere of a piece of space junk. Investigation procedures have varied considerably over the years, but it would not surprise me if a UFO case where re-entry of space debris is the likely explanation was passed to RAF Fylingdales so that this possibility could be explored. This is simply a case of Sec (AS) or its predecessors ensuring that the appropriate experts are brought into investigation. In summary, and contrary to the recent claims, lead responsibility for UFO investigation in the MoD has always rested with Sec(AS) and its predecessors. If this were not the case, and if some covert and sinister research effort had been hidden behind these divisions, you would not be reading about it in freely available files.
