Chaffee was deactivated in the late 50's and largely forgotten by the public, except as a hunting area. New troops were brought in in the mid-80's and security tightened, when this 'find' was first reported. I personally heard a employee at the post say, "They crashed at Roswell, but they landed here." For what it's worth.
