And just to clarify a little more.  The shuttles DO create a
sonic boom, in fact it's a strange DOUBLE boom, but NOT 5 minutes
apart. More like a 1/2-second apart.  I remember the first time I
heard this when I lived near the beach at Santa Monica, as the
shuttle came in over Malibu (or thereabouts) on its way to
Edwards AFB.  My neighbor had to identify the sound for me.
