EBK - I live in Southern CA and was watching TV when subject event took place. I immediately thought it was an earthquake, but realized that the floor and bed were not shaking. I got up to get a drink of water and a second one occurred. The second one was signifcantly quieter, but still rattled the windows. I turned on the local news radio (KNX 1070 AM) to hear if the "event" was going to be reported. After the 11:00 PM national news, they announced that they were receiving a lot of calls from the south Orange County area regarding sonic booms or an earthquake. They went on to say that they had received no indications of an earthquake. They also said that they had been forewarned that there were military exercises underway at camp Pendleton (about 25 miles south of my house) and that there were line charges and artillery involved. In the 5/7/98 LA Times Orange County section, there was a short article mentioning the noises. The article stated that the noises were caused by flight exercises from El Toro (MCAS). I don't believe this report as El Toro is only 3 miles West of my house and I would have heard the jets taking off (I live under the takeoff pattern) and flight operations after 9:00 PM are unusual. I believe the radio report because I have heard artillery from Camp Pendleton before and this "event" was similar (only slightly louder). Thanks for listening! =Steve Martin=
