The articles are posted at the website address listed below. ______________________________________________________________ "Here's The Latest" Airship Passes Over City Of Newport 'A Mysterious Message' Dropped From The Skies By Captain Pegasus The Kentucky Post April 24, 1897 Page 3 Numerous reports were rife in Newport Saturday that the airship had been seen passing over Newport Friday at 8 p.m. Mrs. Pilling of 18 West Third Street, says she saw the ship. It was cigar-shaped and showed a bright light. Miss L. Remme, artist and sister of Ed Rmme, cashier of the German National Bank - residing at 22 West Third Street, found in her yard Saturday morning a little muslin bag filled with sand, containing a note which read: "Passed over Newport at 40 miles an hour. Traveled 200 miles since 4:30 Friday afternoon: Expect to be in Nashville Sunday at 3:30. "CAPTAIN PGASUS." End of article ******* Comment: This article depicts two different spellings for the supposed author of the alleged note. At the top of the article, in captions, the spelling is listed as 'Captain Pegasus.' At the end of the article, the spelling is listed as 'Captain Pgasus.' This could have been a spelling/typo mistake by the reporter from the 1897 newspaper, however I didn't make any discretionary conclusions as I simply re-typed the article as was. If anyone has additional details about the 'Captain Pegasus' reference, or if this has been heard of in other airship reports, I would be terribly curious to acquire more info ********** ============ "AIRSHIP" Said To Have Been Seen Passing Over This City Last Night The Cincinnati Enquirer May 5, 1897 A number of people on Garfield Place saw the airship last night about 9 o'clock, and are willing to make affidavit that they have sighted the mysterious navigator that has been creating so much excitement over the country. Dr. Louis Domhoff, 112 Garfield Place, made a drawing of the light, which he describes as egg-shaped, red in color and appearing as though a portion of it was covered with a curtain, the rays escaping in the center and at each end. It came from the direction of Price Hill and passed to a southeasterly direction, disappearing in about five minutes, and, so far as he was able to approximate, covered a distance of about 20 miles in that time, moving in a zigzag course, first up, then down. Conductor J.C. Gaupel, on the Monmouth street car line, also saw it. W.J. Klein, attorney in the Mitchell Building, and Fred Porter, of the Methodist Book Concern, and a number of others say they saw and watched the curious aeronaut. End of article ============ HE SAW IT A Covington Man Wants To Make An Affidavit That He Beheld the Airship Hovering Over Eleventh Street The Kentucky Post May 18, 1897 Page 5 Mike Sheridan, a well-known resident of Eleventh Street, came into 'Squire Wheeler's office, on Scott Street, Tuesday morning and offered to make an affidavit that he had seen the "airship" Tuesday about 11 p.m. sailing over the corner of Eleventh and Scott Streets. Mr. Sheridan says that the airship he saw was a cigar-shaped machine, and that with its sails spread it presented a triangular outline. According to his best reckoning, the ship was about 15 feet long and only 50 feet above him. Sheridan furthermore states that he is certain he heard the working of its machinery. Mr. Sheridan is a middle-aged man of temperate habits and is not addicted to the use of stogies. He is a life long resident of Covington and possesses an untarnished reputation for veracity.
