From: Darren Danks <darren@darrend.demon.co.uk> Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 01:34:09 +0100 Fwd Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 16:40:48 -0400 Subject: Statement From Nick Redfern And Irene Bott STATEMENT FROM NICK REDFERN AND IRENE BOTT, 9 MAY 1998. Over the course of the last few days, a series of statements have been put out by Tim Matthews in which it has been mentioned that we 'got' Tim 'barred' from speaking at the Cornwall conference this coming August. This is nonsense! This is the situation: In the latter part of 1997, we penned an article for Alien Encounters magazine (see the Christmas 1997 issue for the complete article, or contact Nick for a copy of the text of the article) on the so-called 'flying triangles'. We had discovered at the Public Record Office at Kew that there were a number of reports on file of huge (in some cases 200 feet in length) 'triangles' seen over the United Kingdom in the period 1952-65. In view of this, we concluded that, in our opinion, not all of the 'triangles' were (a) a recent phenomenon; and/or (b) the results of secret aircraft testing. As a result of the publication of the article (which, in fact, referred to Tim as being 'respected' and we actually praised his research!) an item appeared in one of Eric Morris's newsletters commenting in an unwarranted fashion with regard to the article. In view of this, we took a decision to disassociate ourselves from Eric. Several months ago, Tim sent a letter to Irene which contained comments which both of us considered unwarranted and unacceptable. As with Eric, we then took a decision to sever all ties with Tim, too. Now to the crux of the issue: the Cornwall conference. We are entitled to mix with whom we please (as, of course, is anyone -even Tim and Eric) and we choose not to be in the company of Eric or Tim. Therefore, when Nick was asked if he was willing to speak at the Cornwall conference, he said 'Yes', but reiterated our stance re Eric and Tim: We will not speak at events where they are speaking nor will we attend as audience members at talks and conferences where they are speaking. Now, our comments to the Cornwall group re the above amounted to no more than a 45-second passing statement. Moreover, Nick does not know the organiser, and has never spoken with him prior to the phone call to Nick inviting him to speak. In view of this, the idea that we could have some form of sway over the Cornwall group and could somehow influence them as to who they should have on their speaker list is absurd! We are not that influential! Furthermore, if the Cornwall group want Tim to speak at their conference they are quite at liberty to invite him, but we would not even consider attending in any capacity whatsoever. Ironically, in the past Irene has invited Tim and Eric to speak on several occasions before her group and they have readily accepted these offers and neither of us have any bias regarding the research of Tim, Eric or indeed anyone. We are very open-minded on the subject and believe there is room in the subject for all manner of theories provided that matters are addressed in a professional manner. In conclusion, then, these are the facts: (a) For personal reasons stemming from the situation arising from our 'flying triangle' article in Alien Encounters, we do not wish to have contact with, or be in the company of, either Tim or Eric. (b) None of this has a bearing on Tim's research. In fact, Nick actually agrees with some of Tim's conclusions. Moreover, if anyone has seen Nick's new book, The FBI Files, you will see a chapter in there on Nazi-designed flying saucers and Nick states that in his opinion the Nazis were designing and building such craft! So much for the idea that we are only interested in and believe in ET-based UFO technology! (c) In view of our stance, if a conference organiser decides to book Nick and not Eric or Tim (or, indeed, Eric and Tim but not Nick), then that is up to the conference organiser and not us. To reiterate: with regard to the Cornwall conference, Nick doesn't even know the organiser, let alone have the ability to sway his views on who he should have speaking for him! (d) We are quite sure that in view of our stance, some conference organisers will decide to book Tim as opposed to us. That's fine- we have no problems with Tim or Eric airing their views. We won't be throwing tantrums about it or posting further E-mails saying that our research is being stifled. (e) With regard to Tim's comment that 'maybe a trip to the next Staffordshire UFO Group meeting is called for' , Irene would like to suggest that he saves his petrol expenses and uses it to serve a better purpose in his research, as he would be most unwelcome, will not be admitted, and that should any of her group wish to hear him talk, they are quite at their liberty to travel to his quote/unquote 'well-attended Lancashire UFO Society lectures' . (f) Despite all that has gone on regarding the above, at no time in the past week or so did Tim contact either of us to determine the facts behind any statements, inaccuracies etc re our stance regarding Tim, Eric, the flying triangles or the Cornwall conference - or indeed any conference. (g) In a conversation with Dave Gillham (the organiser of the Cornwall conference) only two days ago, we were informed that they were not even contemplating having Tim on the bill in the first place. Also, we were advised by Dave that he would be E- mailing Tim and advising him of this. (h) Irene is unaware of being 'not very popular with anyone in East Anglia, or groups in Kent' and does not understand the meaning behind this. Does anyone else? (i) Also, Irene has had only spoken to Max Burns on three occasions in total, is not therefore in 'regular weekly contact' with him, as Tim states, nor is Irene 'acting as a fixer' - whatever the hell one of those is!! (j) Re the East Anglian UFO footage of David Spoor: Irene and Nick are friends of David; however, David has an agent to handle the footage (Jonathan Downes) and therefore all dealings re the footage are the domain of David and Jon and not Irene! (k) Finally, as we have better things to do with our time, this statement will be the first and last official statement we will make on the above matters. For some time, we ignored the ill- feeling which was coming our way, but now feel the time is right to make a stand. For those of you who have read Tim's comments re this entire controversy we would say this: now you have our side of the story. Judge for yourself. Anything else put out by Tim re the above will be ignored by us from now on. NOTE: over the last few days we have received numerous letters, calls, faxes, e-mails and personal visits from people in the UFO field supporting our stance. To all those, we say thank you. IMPORTANT: This is our only statement on these matters, Any additional comments which may or may not be made by others which in any way mention the above are not sanctioned by us in any way shape or form, and will be the personal comments of the person(s) concerned.
