Victor Kucharek
Postal clerk, UFO buff
Victor T. Kucharek, 69, a retired U.S. post office clerk who was
certain that UFOs and aliens exist, died March 16 of colon cancer
at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Mr. Kucharek, a longtime Troy resident, worked on an assembly
line for Chrysler from 1947 to '68 before he began working at the
post office in 1975. He retired in 1990.
Along with his first wife, the late Irene, he formed the Detroit
UFO Information and Research Center in the 1960s. The group held
meetings at banks and the Detroit Institute of Arts, wrote a
monthly newsletter and invited several noted UFO believers from
around the country.
"It wasn't a belief for him," said his wife, Sharon. "He didn't
say, I believe that UFOs exist; he said, I know that they
exist."
Mr. Kucharek said he had spotted a few UFOs during his life, but
he never relied on personal stories to convince others that they
exist.
"He talked about the research and facts, not himself," his wife
said.
The group faded in the late '70s and had a brief revival in 1981,
but no longer exists.
Mr. Kucharek served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He
later became a dance instructor and taught ballroom dancing and
the boogie woogie. In 1976, he became a minister in the Church of
Ageless Wisdom.
He often crafted wooden toys in his garage for his daughter,
Crystal, including a clown and rocking horse.
Other survivors include five brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Boulan Park, off
Crooks between 16 Mile and 17 Mile roads, Troy.
