These same explanations were posted on the Malin Space Science
(MSSS) site over a month ago. They make no more sense today than
they did then.

http://www.msss.com/mars/global_surveyor/camera/images/index.html

Essentially he is saying that two factors
contributed to the low number of grey levels.

1) The low contrast of the planet surface itself.

2) The controls on the camera were set lower than they should
have been as a precautionary measure.

The precautionary measure was, and I QUOTE: "in case something
unforeseen was in the picture."

He also addresses why the images are only 1024 pixels wide.
Another specific allegation made by Dick Hoagland.

To sum up, he states that a decision was made to obtain a 1024 x
9600 image rather than 2048 x 4800 because:

1) To be sure to get an image of the Face within the 'downtrack'

2) To be sure to avoid any 'black bands' caused by communications
glitches during the transmission because "The MGS Project felt
such losses would not be tolerable in the Cydonia images."

I see a few problems with these explanations.

Reason #1 doesn't make sense since it indicates that they were
more sure of the pointing of the camera than they were of the
downtrack (when the camera would start and when it would stop).
So they compensated for this apparent uncertainty by extending
the downtrack. Calculating the is a much simpler task than
calculating the camera pointing angle. Therefore, one would want
to extend the lateral coverage rather than extend the
'downtrack'.

Reason #2 doesn't make sense since losses in the 'communication
system' could be overcome by simply re-transmitting the data
until you received ALL of the data and eliminated the black
bands.

I do not post this to defend Mr. Hoagland. He can stand on his
own two feet.

I post this for two reasons;

1) It seems that many on this list crave information that will
debunk the artificiality claims for the Cydonia region. The
NASA/Malin explanations and statements are not thoroughly
examined before reaching conclusions. It seems that only the
headlines or web page title are sufficient to debunk in many
minds here.

2) Many of you are not keeping close enough tabs on the
information coming out on the MGS images. This release is over
one month old! Much has happened since then and there are
numerous web sites illustrating some very interesting
discoveries.
