Colonials, foreign natives & so on may like to know that we
in the Mother Country refer to this as "the greengrocer's
genitive". For one always sees cards announcing the prices
of "potato's", "parnip's", "cabbage's" &c in these
establishments.

"Potato's *what*?" I always ask myself, fearing that those
unfortunate enough not to have a decent walled kitchen
garden on their estates may be handing over their
hard-earned (or stolen) cash for a few pounds of weevils,
blight, or other wriggly things, not the decent tasty
carbohydrates, vitamins & minerals they think they are
purchasing.

Obviously there are veggie merchants on the List, too, as I
see some people referring, still more strangely, to a
uniquely genitive or perhaps unknowingly doppelgangered
character called "Tim Matthew's". At any rate I hope no one
is trying to suggest that Tim is some kind of plurality of
vegetable, which would be both most unfair and unacceptably
ad-hominem. Besides, he has shown himself to be a very meaty
fellow.

Those pressing questions aside, idiosyncratic orthography is
hardly the weirdest thing about Steve Bassett's proposal is
it? Can we see some unequivocal proof of the ETs' presence,
please?

No? Really? Sure about that? Mmff. I thought not.
