(See Below.) Alfred C. Loedding was the author of the EToS. He was an expert in "low aspect ratio aircraft." In a 1947 document he is referred to as "the engineer in charge of investigation of unidentified flying objects." (Please note the term was used in both early US and Canadian documents.) In Loedding's own resume he refers to himself as the "Initiator of Project SIGN." He was of German descent, spoke German fluently, and regularly had German scientists at Wright Field to his home for dinner. Since Wendy has agreed to release of some of her findings, it is possible to comment further on the theorized "flying disc plane" that secret weapons advocates have said was built at Wright Field without the knowledge of the Project SIGN. This idea is ludicrous. McCoy, Deyarmond, Goll, Seahorse, and others involved with Project SIGN were experts on German aircraft. Under Projects Paperclip, Lusty and Abstract, they had scoured German for aircraft and designs of German weapons. McCoy took all the technical information back to Wright Field microfilmed and had it translated. One must be careful when talking to relatives of these men. Mrs. McCoy told Dr. Michael Swords that Col. McCoy had nothing to do with Paperclip. Possibly, she did not want people to know that her husband worked with German scientists and military men, many of whom were former Nazis. However, McCoy did work with such people in compiling his technical library and in technical intelligence work. He wrote evaluations of the German's performance and value. Some of these may be found in the records at the National Archives and USAF Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB. Air Intelligence in Europe also periodically recommended additions to the Germans at Wright Field from interviews done with German aircraft designers, engineers and military men. That Col. McCoy who was seriously short handed and under budget constrains would waste his resources when he and Loedding both knew that German scientists at Dayton were producing flying discs is a completely foolish idea. McCoy would have reported to Twining, McDonald, and Cabell such projects were the cause of UFOs and would have recommended that Project SIGN be terminated. Loedding, the expert on low aspect ratio aircraft, would not have produced the EToS if he too knew of the disc plane projects at Wright Field. The "secret aircraft advocates" are barking up the wrong tree. It is possible, however, that Wright Field and even the Directorate of Intelligence (formerly ACS/Intel) were left out of the loop on such developments involving nuclear weapons. Cabell mentioned the lack of personnel with "Q" clearances at the establishment of the Air Force. Penetration bombers were being developed. One of the penetration devices for an attack on the Soviet Union was "parasite planes." Also, other developments such as decoys and Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) devices were also under testing. While the T-2/Intelligence Division/ATIC had liaison officers at the Atomic Energy Commission, the above projects were definitely Q clearance territory. So McCoy and the others might not have been read in on this research. I would expect, however, that the nuclear project officers would eventually let ATIC in on any such projects. However, there would still seem to be a good area of investigations for disc plane advocates. In my 1947 report, there is a parasite plane sighting. During the 1950 wave there is a widely reported sighting of an Air Force bomber over Texas releasing what to the witness looked like a disc. A test of a decoy or ECM device? What is needed here is less theorizing and more research. -- Jan Aldrich Project 1947 http://www.iufog.org/project1947/ P. O. If memory serves me correctly I detailed my finding of the following since the beginning of the year: Locating and obtaining the Col. Albert Deyarmond files, the Interview of Bruce Deyarmond, the Interview of Dr. George E. Valley, Jr. and the Interviews of Donald Loedding, son of Alfred Loedding, including the obtaining and reproduction of the Loedding Glass Slide Collection. There may have been more, but I don't remember at the moment. OK, here is some new stuff for all of you to hopefully enjoy. 1. The Estimate of the Situation was, in fact, written by Alfred C. Loedding. 2. The famous photo of Alfred Loedding with the "Flying Saucer" model he made is factual, it actually did fly, was tested at the Wright Field Wind Tunnel after hours to avoid problems, was red in color and was based upon testimony from military witnesses as to objects observed he obtained while working on Project SIGN. 3. Photographs of the actual working model of the flying disc patent design have been located. Unfortunately, the actual model was destroyed in a move by Don Loedding in 1974 when he moved from South America back to the United States. 4. My research partner, Michael David Hall and I have knowledge of who actually fired many of the members of the Project SIGN team. This is an ongoing effort and we will not release any more details regarding this matter at this time. 5. I have located and received from George Towles many of his personal papers and a photograph. An interview has been arranged. 6. Much of the dissension among the military regarding Project SIGN was based upon the fact that the SIGN project was not funded and monies were funneled from other important research projects to be used by the SIGN team in their investigation. 7. Project SIGN was a parallel investigation in conjunction with investigations being conducted both at AFOIN and the ONI/ONR. 8. Alfred Loedding was the first civilian head of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Wright Field in 1941 and began the process for what we know as the JPL today. 9. Many FOIA requests have been made to attempt to obtain new documentation regarding the Estimate of the Situation. 10. Mike Hall and myself have recently completed a general interest book on Alfred Loedding and the 1947 UFO Wave. It will be available late next month or early January. It is titled, "Alfred Loedding and the Great Flying Saucer Wave of 1947." We will take advanced orders. Price has not been set. There is much new information regarding early 1947 sightings in the book. 11. Final draft copies of my book are now located at the Fund for UFO Research and the Dr. J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies. No date or publisher has been set for its release. It is tentatively titled: "Anatomy of a Project: Project SIGN. An Illustrative History of the First Secret Investigation of UFOs by the USAF." 12. An International UFO Reporter article detailing Michael Hall and my work on Loedding is tentatively scheduled for release early next year. 13. I have been invited and accepted a guest shot on the MSN UFO Forum Chat for November 27th.
