Hold on a minute. I think you've lost me. Whatever his accomplishments (one of which, modest enough, was to be a hero of my youth), Ley was hardly "one of the great men of the 20th Century" (that title goes to the likes of Einstein, Freud, Sakharov, Mandela, King, FDR, Churchill, and the like [or, on the Dark Side of that equation, Stalin, Hitler, Mao]). Ley certainly was not an astronomer, at least a professional one. He was basically just another of us freelance writers, always scraping for a buck and serving as living proof that the number of writers who make a living wage is pretty damn small. You don't mention his role as a pioneering cryptozoological writer, author of several books on what he called "exotic zoology" before anybody thought up the term "cryptozoology." These important albeit flawed works are discussed by Aaron M. Bauer in Cryptozoology 9 (1990): 88-91. I had not heard before that Ley was Jewish, which would not matter at all if, of course, such things had not mattered profoundly to Nazi murderers. Are you sure of this? From what I understand, Ley fled Germany not because he feared Hitler's ethnic cleansing but because he thought the Nazis might come down on him for publishing rocketry articles outside Germany. If you know better, I'd be happy to be corrected. Jerry Clark
