James, The 'Ramey telegram' may be indecipherable, however, as the printing consists of fixed spacing, this offers important clues to the probabilities. The number of letters in each word and the relative spaces between the words and lines seems to be consistent, verifiable by reference to any lines above or below. As such, this is the template for the portion of the message which is relatively visible: [All of the following requires a 'fixed font'] ... *** *** ******* ** *** ***** *** ********* ** *** ... ** **** *****, ***. ... ** *** ****** **** **** **** *** ****** ******** ... ** **** ****** ** ****** ******* ** *****??? *****(?) ... **** **** ******** ******* ** ***** *** ***** ... **** **** *** ** ** ******* ******** ***** **** ... **** *** **** ********* *****. ... ****** On the forth line, it's not clear if there are three letters as designated by '?' at the end of the second-last word. However, the spacing suggests they should exist. The exact length of the last word may be longer than five characters, that isn't clear either. Unfortunately, the available scan still leaves much of the message illegible and there are many letters which can only be guessed at. We can however determine the length of most visible words and that proves what isn't possible. Neil Morris' interpretation of the message was: 1) ---------------------------***ARY WERE --------------------- AS THE 2) --------------fxs 4 rsev1 VICTIMS OF The WRecK and CONVAY ON TO THE 3) -------------*** at FORT WORTH. Txe. 4) ------------***S** smiThs *ELSE* ***** unus-d**e T&E A3ea96 L******* 5) -------------SOught CRASHEs pOw*** *** N***** SITEOne IS reMotely ***** 6) -----------------***D** bAsE ToLd ***a* for we**ous BY STORY are ***** 7) -----------------lly thry even PUT FOR BY WEATHER BALLOONS n*d** were 8) --------------------**** *** la** l***denver ***** 9) 10) Temple ## notes. Use Monospace to keep format as per image. Capitals denote firm interpretation. Lowerspace are educated guesses, "*" denote unknown letter, "-" denote complete unknown or obscured. Based on my analysis, some of the contents from previously suggested translations would remain conceivably correct, however, other interpretations can not be. For example, "SITE TWO S.W. MAGDALENA, N.MEX", as above, obviously isn't sustainable. I would only be confident about "FORT WORTH, TEX." being visible at the end of line two, perhaps "POWERS" as being the third word in line four. The word suggested to be 'VICTIMS' could in fact be many other seven letter words, possibly 'REMAINS', as in, conceivably : ... *** THE REMAINS OF THE ***** YOU FORWARDED TO THE ... AT FORT WORTH, TEX. or, perhaps: ... *** THE REMAINS OF THE ***** YOU REQUESTED TO THE ... AT FORT WORTH, TEX. As the telegram has presumably been received by Ramey, it would make more sense if he was being informed about something he had requested, rather than forwarded. At that point, with the 'debris' having only been received, what would Ramey have been able to forward and for which receipt was being acknowledged? Incidentally, for those who maybe aren't aware, the scanned 'Ramey telegraph' image is available at: http://adm2.ph.man.ac.uk/ftw-pics/new-1/rmysignl.htm I'm reasonably sure the template outlined is accurate. If disputed, the factual evidence would be welcome. Otherwise, it does require a rethink of the claims being publicised. James. E-mail: pulsar@compuserve.com
