BBS stands for Bulletin Board System, which was usually accessed via a modem directly, and not through the Internet. However, Internet links to many larger BBS systems were installed by many BBS operators toward the end of their reign as the primary link between computer users. Nearly all BBS systems provided free access to a text (or ASCII) based system and laid the philosophical groundwork for what later became the multimedia based World Wide Web. Steve
