Apparently so. >That is, somehow over the last forty years the >scientist/intelligence agent has been converted into a kindly >old gent who, with pipe-in-hand, had the interests of us all at >heart. <snip> Dr. Hynek, in the end, was not a debunker. In his book, The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry, Copyright 1972 by J. Allen Hynek, he advocated an intense scientific investigation of UFOs be done by the most prominent scientists of the day. The sincerity of the witnesses that he personally interviewed and his personal investigation of many sightings had led him to believe that UFOs were a true phenomena worthy of examination. He felt that unraveling the mystery of UFOs would lead to a quantum leap in the level of scientific knowledge. In reality, Dr. Hynek's association with Project Blue Book, etc., turned him from the absolute skeptic that he was in the beginning to someone who believed that there was concrete substance to the UFO phenomena. Quoted from the jacket of his book: "Professor Hynek was throughout its existence, the official astronomical consultant to the U.S. Air force's Project Blue Book, the final official arbiters on all UFO reports. Further, Dr. Hynek, currently the Director of the Lindheimer Astronomical Research Center, at Northwestern University and Chairman of Northwestern's Astronomical Department, has served as Associate Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass., as well as heading its NASA-sponsored satellite tracking program. With such credentials and experience Professor Hynek does not lightly challenge the official UFO line. But to him the evidence is irrefutable. The UFO thesis has NOT been disproved. The questions raised by the cases he cites have never been answered. But Dr. Hynek does not just pose awkward questions; he also proposes a means whereby a process of scientific verification can be established." Loy
