In this issue: Featured Title; Recent Arrivals; and Things to Come: FEATURED TITLE: <A HREF=3D"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809237962/bufosweirdworld= "> Passport to Magonia (paperback)</A> Subtitle: On UFOs, Folklore, and Parallel Worlds by Jacques Vallee Originally published: 1969 Reprint edition In the anomalistics field, good books change people's ideas: great books change their minds. Prior to the publication of PASSPORT TO MAGONIA in 1969, pro-UFO studies largely argued that "genuine UFO sightings" (which can be defined as competent, rational people honestly reporting observations of airborne= objects that are apparently unknown to society) were evidence of extraterrestrial visitation. While the conceptual palette had been expanded to include the= idea that what had been interpreted in the past as having been supernatural could have been misinterpreted extraterrestrials (in particular, with Barry Downing's <A= HREF=3D"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=3D1569247455/bufosweirdworld= A/"> The Bible and Flying Saucers</A>), the reverse was considered almost= heretical within the UFO "community" Jacques Vallee himself, a computer scientist, had written two books (neither of which can be ordered currently ordered), ANATOMY OF A PHENOMENON (1966)= and CHALLENGE TO SCIENCE (1967) which had tentatively supported the extraterrestrial hypothesis and gotten some respect from traditional scientists. If he had stopped there, he would have been seen as a great validator for those who believed that aliens got into physical space craft= on another planet and flew to Earth. Vallee didn't stop. True scientists and other truth seekers know: the more= you know, the more you know there is to know. While the Condon Committee was preparing its huge, government-funded report (which is also sadly not available to be ordered) that would "debunk" UFOs, Vallee was doing some lateral thinking. As he puts it in his personal journal (reproduced in <A= HREF=3D"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=3D1569248087/bufosweirdworld= A/"> Forbidden Science : Journals 1957-1969</A>), "I see that we cannot hope to understand UFOs with the methods of physics= and statistics alone. We are facing a form of intelligence that cannot simply be tracked with radars and cameras. It was already here before science was invented; it will still be here when science becomes superseded to other= ways of gaining knowledge." That doesn't mean that the book (or Vallee) had rejected objective thinking for subjective. It examines, in some ways similarly to C.G. Jung's <A= HREF=3D"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=3D1567311210/bufosweirdworld= A/"> Flying Saucers (Jung)</A>, the beliefs around the observations. There is, according to the book, certainly a mystery. The ways in which it parallels previous mysteries are in themselves mysterious (when people report things about UFO occupants, those characteristics may match those of fairies, for example=85presumably without the reporter knowing the fairy= characteristics). The book's ideas, arrived at rationally, seemed irrational to many. Vallee moved away from the comfortable (for many believers) into the uncomfortable.= Yet, those believers couldn't reject the work. While it cast doubt on their pet theory, it supported the reality of the phenomenon on which it was= based. The appendix, A CENTURY OF UFO LANDINGS (1868-1968), which was longer than= the rest of the book, was and still is often cited by supporters of the extraterrestrial hypothesis. It is often so referenced while ignoring= Vallee's emphatic warning about the nature of the evidence. While there are thousands of books on UFOs, few are as important as this= one. It contributed to a rift between European researchers and the ETH-proponents in the USA. It made possible the presentation of evidence that didn't= conform to expectations. Above all, it said this: while observation is limited, inquiry is boundless.
