Terry, thanks so much for this reference. As I understand sonoluminescence from reading the material on this website, sound is not really translated into light. Instead, the energy in very high frequency sound waves -- above the normal range of human hearing -- can create vibrations in certain substances that cause them to emit light. What's important to understand, considering the discussion we've been having here, is that the sound doesn't create any kind of equivalent of itself in light. This is not, in other words, a way of translating a particular sound frequency into a particular light frequency. Instead, it's a physical process in which sound energy stimulates the production of light, much (I hope I've got this right) as electricity stimulates the production of light in a light bulb. The particular nature of the sound energy as we hear it (or, in this case, as a dog might hear it) has no relationship with the particular nature of the light energy it creates. Greg Sandow
