Thank-you for sending along this quote, Brian. Very informative. In fact now I'm sure that there is no magnetic bending of light, laser or otherwise, happening in one of these machines. The "changes in the polarization" of the reflected laser light, in this example, has more to do with the "reflective properties of the MO layer that were modified by the magnetic record head". By "aligning the magnetic dipoles", you are going to modify the reflective properties of the material as well. In the case of a non-reflective, read-through media, polarization would take the place of reflection (sort of). Picture that entire readable track on the disk being a gazzillion tiny little mirrors (or one really long one) carved from one big mirror by melting a spot, aligning it's reflective surface magnetically, and movinging along to the next little mirror. The laser is lower-power when reading because if it weren't, you'd melt the little mirrors again and be back at square one, a blank disc. Sounds to me like this technology was invented to avoid manipulating the laser itself, with regards to writing and reading the data. I can imagine that being quite a finnicky operation, considering the tolerances involved. It's so much easier to do it magnetically. I guess the next step will be aligning the dipoles discreetly, atom by atom, and make it affordable teeny-weeny read-write head ). This is my take on the quote you graciously supplied. I could expand on this if you are interested (supper's ready). Let me know...
