Hi, Rick. Thanks for the stimulating post. If I may briefly add a definition on the Faraday effect from a handout given at good ol' Purdue (our local University), the Farady Effect is: "A magneto-optic effect in which the polarization plane of an electromagnetic wave is rotated under the influence of a magnetic field parallel to the direction of propagation." Which suggests that there is a direct interaction between the EM wave and the magnetic field, rather than polarization introduced by the reflective properties of the MO layer in a magneto optical device modified by a magnetic field (unless, I'm missing something, that is :)).
