Well Brian, I did some poking around after reading this post and
from what I can gather, you were absolutely right and I was
wrong (ouch, that smarts!). Here's a quote I found on a Physics
website discussing Faraday rotation;

"Given two rays of circularly polarized light, one with left
hand and the other with right hand polarization, the one with
the polarization in the same direction as the electricity of the
magnetizing current travels with greater velocity. I.e., the
plane of linearly polarized light is rotated when a magnetic
field is applied perpendicular to the propagation direction. The
empirical angle of rotation is given by >(formula here)"

Fascinating stuff! Seems to imply that the light is being sped
up or slowed down, which is pretty amazing in itself. I'll have
to do more reading about this. Can you think of anything that
utilizes this effect on a larger scale than a MO disc? I'd love
to see this effect in action if in fact one can see it at all
(with eyes, that is). I wonder if you can apply it to other,
non-laser sources of light as well. Thanks for setting me
Straight :)

Cheers
Rick Goldsmith
