Subject: 'Apocalypse Pretty Soon'


Greetings:

This is a general message to participants in this forum. My name
is Alex Heard; I’m an editor at Wired magazine and the author of
Apocalypse Pretty Soon, a new book about American subcultures at
the turn of the millennium. Two chapters in the book are
UFO-related, and I think you'll find them interesting and
entertaining. One is about the Unarius Academy of Science, the
famed UFO-oriented religion in Southern California. Another
concerns Dr. Steven Greer, a contactee who takes groups of
people out at night to try and "initiate" contact with
extraterrestrials. (I first wrote about Dr. Greer years ago in
Outside magazine, an article that is still distributed by the
Fund for UFO research.) I approached these stories with an
attitude of friendly skepticism and, I hope, good humor. Please
let me know what you think.

Excerpts from the book -- dealing with other aspects of the
millennium, including "Earth Changes" and the far right -- are
available in the February 1999 issues of Wired and Outside. I
also have a web site where I'll keep track of millennial and
futuristic groups as the year 2000 approaches.
