I'm the author of THE SCIENCE OF STAR WARS, which has just been published by St. Martin's Press. The book explores the four STAR WARS films and asks, how possible is that "galaxy far, far away"? I'm a STAR WARS fan from way back in 1977, when I went into a movie theater and was completely blown away by George Lucas's vision. The STAR WARS movies fueled my interest in space travel and the possibility of alien life, which led me to become an astrophysicist and to work at NASA, and now to write this book. The book has chapters on Planetary Environments, Aliens, Droids, Space Ships and Weapons, and The Force. I discuss in depth what alien life might be like, the factors controlling its formation, whether STAR WARS aliens are plausible, and whether they are appropriate for environments we see them in. You can find further information, including an expanded table of contents and excerpts from the book at my website: http://www.sff.net/people/jcavelos I'd be happy to answer any questions you have on the newsgroup, if you like.
