Greetings List -

I came across the following in the Clippings section of the May
1999 edition of the World Press Review.

Close Encounters in Caledonia

The glens of Scotland could hold secret British military bases
that are hiding UFOs, claims Ron Halliday, a senior academic at
Stirling University. Halliday, chairman of Scottish Earth
Mysteries Research and author of UFO Scotland: The Secret
History of Scotland's UFO Phenomenon (B&W Publishing), says the
military may be using large rural areas to store alien life away
from public view.

Glasgow's Herald reports that Halliday has pinpointed the remote
Highland village of Machrihanish as the possible site of a
secret base. The village used to be the location of a large NATO
base and still has a long airport runway. Over the past few
years, locals have reported seeing flying saucers and other
unexplained phenomena. Halliday says "Machrihanish would be an
ideal spot from which to operate aircraft technology that the
government wanted to keep secret, including devices allegedly
developed from captured alien discs." He added, "It's not easily
accessible and so is protected from prying eyes."

Locals, however, remain skeptical. They say that tiny
Machrihanish, population 200, is better known for close
encounters with flying golf balls than with aliens. One woman at
the golf club, who wanted to remain anonymous, says, "I doubt
this is happening." And a spokesperson for Britain's Ministry of
Defense tersely tells The Herald, "We do not have any such
bases."
