Other images of Mars show apparent tracks of giant tornado-like storms across the surface. A dust devil apparently was caught in action when, between two frames of one of the Mars Viking Landers, it blew away one of the little piles of soil when had been scooped by the robot shovel-arm. I have seen similar dust devils two years ago from Kitt Peak, Arizona, site of the National Observatory. In early May, about noon, I could see, simultaneously, 8 or 9 dust devils in different directions in the Sonora Desert. The largest spanned the width of my thumb at arm's length and was probably 25 miles away (similar to the distance of Tucson, visible in another direction). Clear skies, Bob Young
