It might be good to keep in mind that Dr. Hynek was also
responsible for the "swamp gas" explanation for UFO sightings.

He gave this explanation for UFO sightings while he was assigned
as the sole professional astronomer consultant assigned to
Project Blue Book.  Dr. James E. McDonald severely criticized
Dr. Hynek for this preposterous explanation to which Dr. Hynek
alluded to the fact that he had to "bow" to the pressures put on
him by the government to explain away all UFO sightings as
natural objects or loose his job.  Although McDonald had high
hopes for the credibility of the Blue Book project when Dr.
Hynek was first assigned as consultant, he soon lost faith in
the program after he found out that Dr. Hynek was just another
spokesman for the "party line".  McDonald and Hynek had several
emotional discussions where McDonald berated him publicly for
not standing up for what he believed.
