In particular, a question from a Tony Spurrier asking about control studies. Yes, control studies have been conducted; BLT has made circles with feet, planks & rope, and cement rollers, then sampled the crop as we normally do to look for the regularly-found plant anomalies. We did _not_ find (1) node elongation of the plant stems, (2) expulsion cavities at the nodes of plant stems, (3) altered redox ratios (measurements of mitochondrial respiration rates), or (4) altered germination characteristics in the downed plants when compared with controls taken elsewhere in the test fields. We DID observe node bending, up to 45 degrees at 3 weeks after making the circles, when circles were made in young, vigorously growing wheat; since node bending can also occur in the "real McCoy," this study indicated that such node bending cannot be considered significant _unless_ one knows how old the crop was at the time the formation occurred, and fairly exactly _when_ it was madel--so that one can distinguish between node bending due to phototropism/gravitropism and the causative eneregy system. Another finding obtained from time to time with crop circles is what we call the "spillover" effect, where plant (and also soil) changes are found extending out into the standing crop outside the visible downed confines of the 'circle'. In our control studies we did _not_ observe this finding either, altho in many cases in several countries we have observed this spillover effect extending up to 300' outside the downed crop area, and in some cases these effects decreasing in degree as a function of sampling distance away from the edge of the downed crop out into the field (in accordance with the well-known Beer-Lambert Principle in physics, which describes the absorption of EM energies by matter). Furthermore, the contention which has been raised by some individuals, that downed crop is the result of over-fertilization and subsequent rain or weather damage (so-called "lodging") has also been examined in a control study we conducted in Maryland in 1997. One test plot was over-fertilized 100%, the other left as the farmer had fertilized it; this was wheat, for commercial harvest. Again, none of the normally observed physical alterations in the plants were obtained in the man-made circles (which were constructed during the early, mid and later growth stages) _except_ for the node bending effect, which was most significant in the young wheat. There was absolutely no weather damage observed in this particular control study, even though the test strip was 100% over-fertilized and there were severe storms throughout the growing season. We do, however, believe that "lodging" does occur in heavily over-fertilized areas of the field (areas where tractors turn around and accidentally drop and re-fertilize the turning areas), particularly at the edges of fields.... However we would guess that this situation occurs much less often than many farmers seem to think. We _do_ observe randomly downed crop (non-geometric "crop circles") in _many_ cases to exhibit the same plant abnormalities as those discovered in many crop circles. We have tested many randomly-downed (or "chaotically-downed") areas of crop, both by themselves and in conjunction with the "geometric" circles, often finding the same types of changes observed in the geometric circles, but usually to a more severe degree: node elongation, for instance, in the geometrically-downed areas seldom exceeds 100%; in randomly-downed crop sampled in Maryland and elsewhere we have found node length changes in excess of 200%.....same sorts of differences in expulsion cavity incidence and other parameters. Hope the above helps clear up Mr. Spurrier's questions....if people are interested in learning about the work done by BLT they can reach our office by fax (617/492-0414) or phone (617/492-0415) or by mail: BLT Research, Box 400127, Cambridge, MA 02140, USA. Unfortunately I don't have the time to answer all e-mails. Please do not post my email address. Sincerely, Nancy Talbott Field Research Coordinator BLT Research Team Inc.
