Las Vegas Compass Guide -
There are no lack of fluffy, superficial tourist guides for this
mass-market city.
This guide is different: It is more of a history book than
than a Baedeker.
Las Vegas resident Deke Castleman,
who also wrote the Nevada Handbook,
finds plenty of history to talk about. Okay, so it doesn't
extend to the Middle Ages,
but the mobsters, hookers and gamblers of the
past century are interesting enough.
This is also a fine picture book,
full of glittery color photos
of Vegas's always-temporary attractions.
(Published in 1996,
the guide is only slightly out of date.)
There are sections in the back on the usual tourist nonsense -
hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc. - but this info is bound to be
obsolete in six months.
Only history is reliable, and it is
probably the most interesting thing about the town.
This is a good book to read on the plane to Vegas,
then you can breeze through the city in a few hours
and head out to the desert.
