9/7/01 The third image of the Dramatic Rust series, this image was based on the scene created for "Geologic Technology". In this image, the array of twenty lights adds realism to the shadows that wouldn't be available otherwise. Massive erosion was used on the background terrain and a new texture, based on "Painted Desert" had to be substituted; the original rust texture was so complex that it could not sustain a decent appearance in the more evenly lit conditions of this image.
You can see the erosion applied to the terrain; also, some small "mounds" were added. The sun ray is a range-limited volume light that shoved the rendering time up to a hour or so. Despite the fact that the scale has not changed, the erosion and the lighting serve to make the scene appear far larger than that used for "Geologic Technology". There are still three distinct planes of distance, but the middle plain is now quite distant. This image was inspired by some of the aerial views of the desert that I photographed when returning from a trip to Borland in Scotts Valley, CA. Below is a good example of the vivid geologies...
