Project 1947 - EM Effects Catalog

The catalog is now also available as part of The Temporal Doorway UFO Database.

There is also a catalog drawn from the complete catalog, but restricted to radio interference cases.

And the BUFORA Vehicle Interference Catalog which is part of the Project 1947 EM Effects Catalog.

The Catalog

This is the raw EM (Electro-Magnetic) effects catalog generated by the Project 1947 effort, coordinated by Jan Aldrich. The catalog represents the rawest of raw data. This catalog may include entries which are not related to UFOs, which are hoaxes, which are misperceptions, or where the EM effects are not a consequence of the presence of the UFO. Cite these cases at your own risk.

Mark Cashman is currently maintaining this catalog. Please contact him with any additional information on cases in the catalog or any new cases which should be included. We are especially interested in cases prior or close to 1947, but any EM effects cases are of interest. Please be prepared to provide a source for case information as well as the various details.

As of 7/98 this catalog has been committed to a computer database. Each case now has a unique ID. The IDs below 1000 are IDs from the Jacques Vallee's Magonia catalog of UFO landings from 1868 through 1968. IDs above that are new to the catalog.

As of 7/98 the catalog consists of 513 cases. Currently in progress and reflected in this collection is the entry of the contents of the BUFORA Vehicle Interference Catalog.

Basic Characteristics of EM Effects

For those unfamiliar with the nature of EM effects associated with UFO sightings, the following seem to be the basic characteristics of those effects

  • The proximity of a UFO to a vehicle, transmitter, or receiver, can cause interference in vehicle operation, broadcast, or reception.
  • Conventional internal combustion engines seem more prone to failure in the presence of a UFO than a diesel engine.
  • Not all close proximity sightings display EM effects. This may indicate that the EM effect is a voluntary effect on the part of the UFO, rather than a side effect of UFO presence.
  • In some cases, interference seems to be structured into pulses.
  • Witnesses sometimes feel a "prickling" or "shock" which could be interpreted as a static charge.
  • In some cases, the effect begins as the UFO departs. This might be an effect of a propulsion system (perhaps an EMP).
  • Contrary to skeptical assertion, many incidents begin with the vehicle stalling, and thus cannot be a fear reaction to a strange sight.

Other Web Catalogs

Project 1947
John Stepkowski (webmaster)
Many catalogs and other information of interest from this archival research effort coordinated by Jan Aldrich. Includes some of the important Phillips Catalog of Physical Trace Evidence.
UFO Online
Maurizio Verga, Italy
Catalogs are of interest. Unfortunately, the detailed case information is in Italian.
Uses frames and MIDI
Contains information on Italian and international UFOlogy, and comes in an Italian or English version. Hosts the Itacat catalog of over 600 Italian sighings from 1912 through 1996, and Tracat, an unfiltered catalog of 250 Italian trace incidents, many of which are "lone traces" unassociated with a specific UFO report.
